INSIDE OUT
How A School Turns Itself Around
Third Edition
"Central has taught me not to believe anything before you see it for yourself. This school is put down a lot, but it's a good school. Everyone here is doing better. The teachers make it fun, they make you want to learn, they push you really hard. I do all this work and it makes me feel good, and then the grade comes out and I feel really accomplished." — Gerry Kue, Class of 2005
Welcome to the third and final edition of INSIDE OUT, our online journal of what's happening at Central High School. In our first edition, we said that we had a simple goal: to give the community—inside and outside our school—a better appreciation of how Central is changing.

In edition two, we took up a common complaint heard from students around the country: school is boring. We highlighted times where learning comes alive for Central students and teachers—from building roller coasters in physics to writing and performing an original play.

Here we shine the spotlight on the Class of 2005, sharing some of their stories, triumphs and honors. We also catch geometry teacher Rosa Perez and her students in action. "She's a math fanatic," one of her students says, "and I love her for it."

Sure, summer is sweet. For most of us, it means making some money, switching gears, hanging with friends, sleeping in, and spending more time with our families. We can't wait for it to start.

Still, school occupies an important place in our lives. And when the school is a place where more and more students and teachers are caring about each other and learning, as they do at Central, school stands tall in our lives. "Central's become a home to me, that's the honest truth," says Jon Delacruz, Senior Class President.

So check out this last edition of INSIDE OUT. If you are a graduating student, give yourself a big pat on the back. And then, everyone, go have a fine summer.

With special thanks to Central HS principal Elaine Almagno and school redesign coach Bianca Gray; geometry teacher Rosa Perez and her students; and Barbara Cervone and Marc Berger of What Kids Can Do, Inc.
